Soria is settled over a hill in the right bank of the river Duero, between the mounts El Castillo and El Mirón,
where you can enjoy a beautiful sight from the city. The limits are: to the north with town Garray, near the Mythical city of Numancia,
to the south, the town of Los Rabanos and to the west with Golmayo. To the east, you can find the river Duero, which goes along
the Las Ánimas and Santa Ana mounts.
The weather is continental. The city is surrounded by a great number of mountains that keep the warm winds from
the sea from getting into the city. In addition, the altitude of the city makes Soria one of the coldest
provincial capitals of Spain, with really hot and dry summers. It is in Autumn when the most part of rainfalls
happen. The spring use to be short, with mild weather.
The vegetation and the fauna is so similar to the rest of the region. It is remarkable the near spot of Valonsadero,
hill where all Sorianos gather to celebrate the festivities of San Juan. In the city you can find the public park,
La Alameda de Cervantes, even though in Soria it is known as La Dehesa, because years ago it was a place where the
cattle grazed. Now here you can find different trees, like willows, acacias, elms and pines. The ponds are plenty of water plants.
But it is worth to see the beautiful and cared rose garden.
The capital city of Soria has been growing during the last years, but just for the population of the province has
moved to the capital. The numbers are clear: since the beginning of the century to 1920, the population in
Soria kept on growing (from 7000 inhabitants in 1900 to more than 7500 in 1910) From 1920, the rhythm accelerates,
and in 1930, there were 10000 people. Ten years later, the population is 13000. This evolution has been steady
the last 50 years. According to the statistics, the population nowadays is around 35000 inhabitants.
During the last years, the services sector has grown for the increase of tourism. Soria has an important art heritage,
and, as a capital city, has almost all the services and public institutions of the province. Recent data shows that the most important
economical sectors in the city are commerce and services, followed by manufacturing and construction. Agriculture, even though important,
is not the main sector of the city. Education, health, tourism and hotel business, are the most relevant activities related to services
in Soria. Also important are food industries, over all, the related with the production of meat, milk, honey, preserves, etc... The importance
of cattle-raising is reflected in this industry. It is an activity always related to Soria.
Years ago, and due to the immense natural environment richness of the province, people has worked the tree
resources, especially, wood.
